Artists

Paulas Pebbles: 
Paula Ahlstone is a Ventura, California artist who discovered her passion for art in her late forties, as a creative outlet while caring for her mother during her battle with Alzheimer’s. Running along the local beaches, she found solace in collecting glass and pebbles—small treasures that became a way to process her grief and that evolved into the handcrafted jewelry she continues to create today. Among these are her Cairn stacks of pebbles and sea glass that represent guidance on one’s journey, balance, and Zen.  Inspired by nature’s elements of wood, stone, water, and glass, Paula shapes words by hand from wire mounted on found driftwood and composes one-of-a-kind works rooted in the rhythm of the ocean. This growing love with glass and form led her into mosaic, now the center of her work: intricate, one-of-a-kind images assembled from glass that she hand-cuts piece by piece. While many of her mosaics are created on flat panels, she enjoys the challenge of working on sculptural surfaces—first across the curve of a surfboard, and now onto full compound curves in the form of artisan cat and dog houses.  Self-taught, Ahlstone follows an organic approach that lets creativity flow without formal instruction. Each piece is uniquely made to evoke emotion, tell a story, and connect the viewer to the places and memories the ocean holds. Paula lives and works in Ventura, California.
