Samia Karimi

• BIO: For the past 20 years Samia Karimi has trained, performed, choreographed and taught in the dance forms of the SWANA region with various dance companies as well as an independent dance artist. Samia immigrated to the U.S. from Afghanistan at the age of 5. Her curiosity to reconnect with her culture led her to the Bay Area, California where she trained and performed with Ballet Afsaneh from 2015-2022, under the artistic directorship of Sharlyn Sawyer. Samia also studied and performed with Nava Dance Collective under the directorship of Miriam Peretz (2017-2021). Samia is currently an independent dance artist focusing on the study, preservation, and celebration of Afghan dance.  She has performed at numerous private and community events as well as several Afghan music videos. Samia is currently expanding opportunities to continue research in Afghan dance, to collaborate with other artists and to continue teaching Afghan dance to new students. While keeping her passion for dance alive, Samia has also worked in the nonprofit arts space as well as refugee resettlement in Los Angeles. Samia invites everyone, of all ages and backgrounds to embrace dance as a language of devotion and joy and as the ultimate expression of freedom.
