Sarah Stone - sarahstoneart.com Sarah’s grandfather was a rodeo rider in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, a family legend that gave her, growing up in a small NJ suburb, a burning desire to run away and join a rodeo herself. Flash forward a few years and she moved to LA with nothing but a bus pass and an armload of art, discovering upon arrival the funky Venice film studio of Roger Corman. Joining the art department of this low budget, cult classic, space adventure film company was her entry into the kaleidoscopic “rodeo” of the entertainment world. She continued to work in the film business for many years designing sets and fabricating murals and props, gaining experience and skills that laid the groundwork for her current multi-disciplinary art practice. Sarah calls her art style, “Pop Folk Narrative” which describes the influences of storytelling, outsider art, and contemporary culture that inspire her colorful and stylized artworks which incorporate collage, assemblage, illustration, mural making and photography. Her paintings are snapshots in time of people and animals she has seen and sketched. In these documentations and examinations she seeks the trails and afterimages of the ambient energy and magic suffused in everyday moments. While in her studio, Sarah listens to books, podcasts and a wide selection of music, which help put her in a “flow state.” The studio is kitchen, hive, library and DJ booth, “with music from all over the world adding energy to whatever I’m working on.” The push-pull between organized focus and “in the zone” spontaneity keeps Sarah’s process fluid, always allowing the unexpected to pop in. Her philosophy of life and artmaking is that every living being, no matter how different, shares similar and relatable touchpoints which make us all family. With the use of oil paint, acrylic media, and hand-made collage elements applied on wood or fabric, Sarah paints enhanced moments of time and place to find and illuminate universal connections between people and species as we co-exist in this increasingly fragile world. Sarah’s artworks have been exhibited in galleries across the U.S., including Dorado 806, La Luz de Jesus Gallery, Sylvia White Gallery, Gabba Gallery, the Ontario Museum of History and Art; San Luis Obispo Museum of Art; The Autry Museum; and she was the recipient of the Mayor’s Award for Best Artist at Lancaster MOAH/Cedar. Her studios are located in Ventura, CA, and a wildish canyon outside of Los Angeles. She also lives part of the year in New Jersey. The diverse people, animals and environments she encounters in her travels often become the subjects of her art. |
