About the Artist
David Schmitt is a native Venturan who lives and plays in his community of Solimar Beach. Having retired 12-years ago from a career of coaching and teaching, he now pursues the impossible task of trying to manipulate a golf ball into a microscopic hole. He then comes home to the beach and attempts to push water and pigment around on paper in his 360-degree art studio located in a loft overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Sometimes a satisfactory painting occurs and gets displayed on one of the many art walls inside his coastal home.
His passion for watercolor began 12-years ago at the studio of Phyllis Doyon in Camarillo. Her coaching resulted in developing a strategy to "not be afraid" with a "go for it" attitude! Most of his painting sessions end-up like his rounds of golf; not something to be happy with! So, the artwork, along with the golf scorecard, get thrown into the waste disposal.
Those paintings that do survive often find their way into the homes of friends and relatives as gifts. Others are displayed in his son's dental practice to be enjoyed by patients during their visit to the office. If a patient likes a particular piece, they are welcome to take it home and "try it out". If they like it, then the flow of water, pigment and the stroke of a brush proved successful. That particular painting can then have a new home to hang-out in.
Because of his proximity to the mountains and ocean, the area around Ventura offers a plethora of artistic ideas for David to pursue. Hopefully, more original conglomerations will find their way onto walls to be enjoyed, than end-up in the bin.
